Nakamura House is a residence which has all distinct characteristics of Okinawa’s architecture in prewar era.
The existent building was built in the mid 18th century. The basic structural method dates back to the architecture in mainland Japan between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. The particular Okinawa style methods were added to the details which made it distinct structure.
The remain consists of both old worrior class style and farmers’ style which equipped raised floor warehouse, barn, animals shed and others. It has all characteristics of Okinawa’s architectures.
It is quite rare that whole housing structure remained in Okinawa main island that we can learn rich farmer’s life style at that time. It was designated as a Ryukyu Government’s designated heritage in 1956, and an important cultural property by Japanese government in 1972.
