Gala Aoiumi, located in Yomitan Village (central Okinawa Island), is an interactive facility designed around the theme of “ocean and salt.” There, visitors can witness the traditional Okinawan salt making process of boiling ocean water down in a flat kettle over a wood-fire. In the experience booth, visitors can even try making salt themselves. Staff guide visitors through the process of boiling reduced sea water in a stone pot, and mixing back in the salt crystals that float to the top. After 30 minutes, your original salt is ready! You can enjoy the freshly made salt with a senbei rice cracker right away, or take it home in a cute salt container as a souvenir.
